Retirement Visa

“Retirement is when you stop living at work, and start working at living.”

Retirement Visas: Do I qualify?

The Australian Retirement Visa is available to people who wish to spend some of their retirement years living in Australia. Living abroad in retirement is a wonderful experience, and many come to Australia to enjoy Australia’s warm sunshine and climate, or to spend some quality time in Australia visiting family and friends.

The Australian Retirement Visa is available to people who wish to spend some of their retirement years living in Australia. Living abroad in retirement is a wonderful experience, and many come to Australia to enjoy Australia’s warm sunshine and climate, or to spend some quality time in Australia visiting family and friends.

To be eligible for this visa you cannot be a first-time visa applicant, unless you are a partner of an existing Retirement Visa holder, or you have not held another substantive visa since the last time you entered Australia. If you do not meet these criteria, you may prefer to apply for the Investor Retirement Visa 405.

If you are a former Retirement Visa (410) holder or your partner has previously visited Australia on any other substantive visa, you are not eligible to reapply for a Retirement Visa.

However, since July 2009, Retirement Visa holders can apply for a visa valid for up to 10 years from the date of the grant. Provided you meet the above criteria, you can apply for an Australian Retirement Visa whether you are inside or outside of Australia at the time of application.

The Australian Retirement Visa is only available to self-funded retirees, so there are no restrictions on how many hours you are able to work whilst in Australia.

This visa does not lead to permanent residency in Australia or to Australian citizenship, and whilst in Australia on this visa, you are not eligible for Medicare benefits regardless of any Reciprocal Health Care Agreements there may be between the Australian government and the government of your country of passport. You are also expected to maintain adequate health insurance while in Australia too.

What is the Investor Retirement Visa?

As you enter retirement you may find that you would like to invest your retirement funds to perpetuate your lifestyle and standard of living.

Should you decide to invest into an Australian business or property while you are in Australia, the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship can offer you a temporary visa called the Investor Retirement Visa.

This is a particularly popular Australian Visa, as it allows you to remain in Australia to watch over and monitor your investment’s growth for a period of up to 4 years.

To be eligible for an Investor Retirement visa you must be 55 years or older, have no dependents other than your partner, meet the income requirements, and able to make a significant long term financial investment in Australia.

Whilst in Australia on this visa, you are allowed to work up to 40 hours per fortnight, and allow you and your partner to travel to and remain in Australia up to 4 years from the date the visa is granted.

Andrew was a joy to work with during my migration to Australia. During the start he was kind enough to give us an understanding of the application process and the options available to us. With Andrew’s help I got my visa on time and without any complications!
